Overview

Course Outline

The BA (Hons) Top-Up Degree in Professional Dance and Performance is a full-time, one-year course, principally designed to offer a course of study that builds on the training provided by the school’s Foundation Degree course, or equivalent. The course comprises five modules of study with a total of 120 credits, which are all required to obtain the final degree award BA (Hons).

This course provides a practical understanding of the technical skills and artistry required by the profession in ballet, contemporary and jazz techniques with the opportunity to extend the skill base to virtuosic level, and provides training in aspects of musical theatre performance.

Throughout the course, and extensively in the Ballet Central module, knowledge is used in creative situations working with teachers and external professional practitioners leading to public performance opportunities in a range of contexts, including a national tour of small and mid-scale theatres.

The development of individual talent and unique performance qualities is achieved through the breadth of the curriculum, and, most importantly, the National Tour Ballet Central module.  In this, the preparation and performance of a wide range of repertoire, requiring the practical application of different techniques and styles, alongside variations in artistic and musical interpretation and characterisation, facilitate the development of individual strengths and versatility, leading to the development of the distinctive and unique performing artist.

Areas of Training

Classical Ballet

Classical ballet is at the core of the training you will receive at Central. Students attend ballet class, delivered in small groups, six days a week with key training in the following areas:
• Repertoire

• Virtuosity

Contemporary

Professional Practice

Enhancing students understanding of maintaining health and optimum fitness, to include supporting wellbeing through rehearsal, performance, tour and career. Students will develop skills in preparation for employment as a professional dancer.

Musical Theatre

Musical theatre, encompassing jazz, singing and a musical theatre project, is a key part of the supplementary training you will receive in Year 3. Musical Theatre complements the performance skills required of Year 3 students in Ballet Central.

Health and Wellbeing

Central dancers are training to be elite athletes. Your fitness, health, and wellbeing are an all important aspect of your training. Dancers take Pilates classes weekly and have the option to attend additional sessions as part of Central’s injury prevention and recovery from injury programmes. Year 3 dancers focus particularly on preparing their fitness for the Ballet Central tour, and developing a programme of rest and recovery for intense performance days.

Ballet Central

As company members, students are assessed on their engagement and professionalism in rehearsals and on tour. Students are assigned tasks to support with the production aspects of the Ballet Central performances.

Solo Project

Students develop and perform a solo from existing dance repertoire, usually in ballet, including neoclassical, or contemporary. A focused written project, involving extensive research, is completed alongside the rehearsal of the solo to develop the appropriate stylistic performance of the solo to a high standard.

Graduate Success

Xavier Andriambolanoro Sotiya, 2023 Graduate

"Some advice for the new first years would be being open to new experiences and really throw yourself into things that may be different which is still something I’m working on myself. It really does help having those experiences because it makes you feel a lot more prepared for the dance world."

Rachel Neale, 2023 Graduate

“I would like to thank all the wonderful tutors and staff at Central for their continued support.”
