Central announces MA choreography applications open for January 2023 entry

Applications for Central’s renowned MA Choreography course have now opened for entry in January 2023. The course is designed for professional choreographers who wish to develop their choreographic profile and professional skills.

The focus of the MA in Choreography is choreography and research and involves the development and refinement of prepared material for studio or theatre-based performance. The course takes 18 months to complete providing the opportunity for professional choreographers to hone their skills, engage in research and develop their practice at the highest level.

Susan Kempster, Course Lead MA Choreography said: “Central’s MA in Choreography is a highly practical postgraduate degree that champions professional practice. Choreographers can experiment and practice their craft, develop their entrepreneurial and leadership skills as well as achieving academic recognition through research into their own professional work. Central draws on excellent relationships with companies, institutions and organisations in the dance and wider arts industries leading to stimulating and exciting opportunities. Our current cohort, for example, has been collaborating with PhD composers from the Royal Academy of Music on the creation of new work with original music.”

Central’s MA is unique in providing a specialisation in classical and contemporary ballet and as such we are seeking established and emerging choreographers with an interest in critical discourse around ballet, its canons and forms. Students are given the opportunity to investigate the process of choreography by interrogating, identifying, developing, and modifying their existing skills. On successful completion of the MA, graduates will have had an opportunity to develop their own creative and artistic voice and will have increased their choreographic portfolio. Many of Central’s MA graduates have further developed their careers within the dance profession, taking up leadership roles and contributing to the artistic development of UK and international dance companies.

As part of the application process bursary funding for the MA course may be available dependent on financial circumstances.
