Paul Doyle
Paul Doyle leads the academic life of Central School of Ballet as Head of Studies, fostering a student-centered, evidence-informed culture that balances artistic excellence with care and rigour. He oversees curriculum and assessment across programmes, supports staff development, and champions practices that help students thrive as artists, thinkers, and people.
With a background that bridges dance education and sport and exercise science, Paul has taught widely across higher education and professional training. His qualifications include an MSc in Sport and Exercise Science (University of Roehampton), alongside professional teaching credentials with both the RAD and ISTD. He is a member of IADMS and a registered teaching member of the RAD and ISTD. His experience includes syllabus and module development, assessment moderation, and quality assurance, alongside regular coaching and mentoring of students and early-career teachers. He has worked internationally with teachers and schools, translating research into practical studio tools that raise performance, protect wellbeing, and build independent learning habits.
Paul’s teaching and scholarly interests centre on performance psychology and dance science, mental skills training, imagery, goal setting, attention, and safe, efficient technique, always with a focus on practical application. He is known for making complex ideas accessible and for a hands-on approach to Contextual Studies that connects history, culture, science, and studio craft so students can apply knowledge directly to rehearsal and performance.
Beyond Central, Paul works as a freelance lecturer for performing arts universities, delivering performance psychology lectures and seminars, and he provides CPD for dance teachers in the UK and internationally. He collaborates with schools and organisations on curriculum design, assessment practice, and teacher development, helping to align high standards with inclusive, student-focused learning. Paul is also an Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance.
“Contextual Studies should be lived, not just read. My classes link history, ideas, and science with day-to-day studio practice so dancers become reflective, independent ‘thinking’ artists. That practical, curious spirit is exactly why I love Central’s approach, high standards, real-world application, and a culture that helps every student grow.”
