Boys Dance Too – A brand new, free of charge, multi-venue boys dance event announced in London, Leeds and Southampton

Tuesday 9 December 2025

Five leading dance HE institutions are collaborating to create a brand new boys’ dance event for 11-16 year old male-identifying dancers. A new initiative aimed at supporting young male-identifying and non-binary dancers to discover HE training in dance, organized by Central School of Ballet, London Contemporary Dance School, London Studio Centre, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

Boys Dance Too offers a pathway into dance training, building aspiration, awareness and confidence in its participants. The project will be delivered across three days in the February half-term. The host venues – London (Central School of Ballet), Leeds (Northern School of Contemporary Dance) and Southampton (Mayflower Theatre) will facilitate a series of practical sessions in ballet, contemporary, street dance styles, improvisation and choreography. Participants will meet expert male teachers and learn more about dance in Higher Education and the range of career opportunities available.

This project will create more male-focused spaces for young dancers keen to explore the art form further, whilst also spreading knowledge and guidance for those already inspired by dance. Its founding partners bring a wealth of expertise in Higher Education and vocational training, ensuring that the necessary knowledge and guidance can be shared with participants.

The Boys Dance Too project addresses barriers to participation for young male-identifying dancers – such as a sense of lack of belonging, representation, and role models. In addition, there are sometimes questions amongst such students and their parents/carers about who dance is for and who can access it.

The challenges faced with male recruitment in HE institutions form part of a wider decline in school arts engagement among 11-15 year olds. As Higher Education institutions delivering courses in dance, the project leaders for Boys Dance Too recognise that more needs to be done to ensure that pathways into dance are created for all young people. It is therefore crucial that dance providers seek to nurture the training progression necessary for young male-identifying dancers to continue dancing and aspire to a career in dance if they so wish.
