Central School Of Ballet

Course Outline

Foundation & BA (Hons) Degree in Professional Dance and Performance

Central is the only vocational ballet school to offer a Foundation Degree leading to a BA (Hons) in Professional Dance and Performance, validated by The University of Kent.

The degree rewards the high level of training and outstanding achievements of Central's students, giving graduates a qualification that is internationally recognised and respected.

The range and quality of the course provides thorough and professional preparation for entry into a career in professional dance. Training is provided by internationally renowned teachers who have performed for some of the world's leading dance companies.

Programme of Study

The course content covers a varied curriculum including Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Jazz Dance, Choreography, Drama, Music, Singing and Contextual Studies, culminating with a UK tour in third year as Ballet Central, which gives an unparalleled preparation for professional employment. Besides consolidating a high level of physical skill and technique, students also develop artistically, emotionally and intellectually to become creative, versatile performing artists.

The 3-year course leads, in the first 2 years, to a Foundation Degree and in the 3rd year to a BA (Hons) in Professional Dance and Performance.

Assessment Methods

Students are assessed through continuous assessment (work in class and progress) and designated assessments (performances, mock auditions, verbal presentations and written assignments). Assessments are intended for students to demonstrate their individual skills and knowledge and their progress and achievement.

Assessments form an integral part of the degree programme and serve as opportunities to demonstrate progress and also to identify areas of weakness which may need further attention and help.

Assessments lead to written and/or oral feedback with students' tutors. Students are expected to actively engage in feedback sessions and should keep their own progress files. Feedback should be used to set relevant learning targets for the next stage of the course.

Central aims to create versatile and highly accomplished dancers who are ready on graduation to take up employment at dance companies. The ability to work independently and reflect on their performance to set future targets will be essential as students make the transition into employment. Central believes that students will develop creative, artistic and intellectual capacities more fully when they reflect on their practice and learn to understand their unique qualities.
