Second year Central School of Ballet students perform at Northern Ballet’s 50th anniversary gala

Tuesday 7th January 2020 Leona Hayhoe writes:

Two Central School of Ballet students were invited to perform at Northern Ballet’s 50th anniversary gala on 4th January.

Matteo Zecca and Ellise de Andrade performed the enchanting Fireside Pas de Deux from Christopher Gable’s Cinderella, originally choreographed for Northern Ballet during his time as Artistic Director.

Central School of Ballet was the only school invited to perform alongside premier dance companies such as The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Scottish Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre.

The evening also paid tribute to Central’s founder Christopher Gable, who served as Artistic Director to Northern Ballet for over ten years. Christopher’s wife Carole attended the gala with his long-time collaborator and friend, composer Philip Feeney. In a pre-recorded video shown during the gala, Carole spoke about Christopher’s life and legacy and the role he had in shaping Northern Ballet into the leading company it is today.

“Artistic Director David Nixon celebrated the influence of Northern Ballet on the dance industry on Saturday night. He highlighted the contribution of both Christopher Gable and Philip Feeney to the success of the company. Performing alongside world class dancers is an experience our students will never forget. We are grateful to David for this unique opportunity and for his continued support of Central in his capacity as Artistic Advisor to the school." Heidi Hall, Director of Central School of Ballet.

Central celebrates the life of Christopher Gable

Wednesday 13th March 2019 Isabel Campbell writes:

Today we celebrate the life of Christopher Gable, Founder of Central who was born on this day in 1940. Christopher’s aim was to put theatricality at the heart of classical ballet performances, and this continues to influence the training that Central offers.

Kenneth MacMillan’s House of Birds is part of the Ballet Central 2019 repertoire. Christopher recreated the lead male role of this ballet, inspired by the macabre fairtyale 'Jorinda and Joringel' in 1963 (pictured here alongside Maryon Lane)..

”Today, I dedicate all that we have achieved at Central to the memory of my beloved teacher and mentor Christopher Gable, who died 20 years ago today. His vision of leading a school that nurtures theatrical, versatile and highly employable talent is a vision I strive to fulfil every single day. We continue to miss him but his voice is very much alive in each dancer that trains with us at Central.”
